PC ABS blend is an engineering thermoplastic alloy that combines the strength and heat resistance of polycarbonate with the processability of ABS. Choosing the grade is only half the decision: the properties a compound delivers depend on the PC-to-ABS ratio and the additive package, and reproducing them in production depends on the compounding line. This article covers the material, its properties and applications, and the extrusion equipment and configuration used to make it.
What Is a PC ABS Blend?
A PC ABS blend is a thermoplastic alloy of polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS). Both base polymers are amorphous, and alloying them enhances processability. The blend is normally produced by melt compounding, which allows the formulation to be tuned for a specific part.

The two polymers contribute different characteristics:
Polycarbonate provides rigidity, toughness, clarity and good heat resistance. On its own, PC reduces in viscosity only gradually as shear rate increases, which makes it demanding to process.
ABS provides moderate impact strength, moderate chemical resistance, good surface quality and easy processing, with heat resistance lower than PC.
The blend takes the processability of ABS and the mechanical and thermal performance of PC. PC/ABS alloys show a significant viscosity decrease as shear rates rise, so they process more easily than pure PC, while remaining tougher than ABS and offering much higher heat resistance than ABS. PC/ABS is also a more cost-effective option than unfilled PC for parts that do not require PC’s optical clarity.
The PC-to-ABS ratio is the main lever on the finished property set. Raising the PC share increases heat resistance and toughness, while raising the ABS share improves flow and surface finish and reduces cost. Molecular weight of the PC and the additive package changes the balance further, so two compounds sold under the same family name can behave differently in the same mould.
Key Properties of PC ABS Blends
Typical properties of one representative unfilled PC/ABS grade are shown below. Actual values vary significantly by grade and formulation.
| Property | Reference Value |
| Tensile strength | 5,900 psi (≈40.7 MPa) |
| Tensile modulus | 278,000 psi (≈1.92 GPa) |
| Flexural strength | 9,800 psi (≈67.6 MPa) |
| Flexural modulus | 280,000 psi (≈1.93 GPa) |
| Heat deflection temperature at 66 psi (0.45 MPa) | 110 °C |
Around those figures, the material offers:
Heat performance. Heat resistance is clearly higher than standard ABS, and low-temperature toughness remains good, so the material covers applications that ABS cannot hold.
Processing and dimensional stability. Good flow and stable dimensions make the blend suitable for thin-wall and complex mouldings where tolerances must hold over time.
Surface and appearance. The material accepts colouring, painting and secondary decoration well, and produces a glossy moulded surface.
Modification potential. Flame retardants, UV stabilisers, impact modifiers, glass fibres, mineral fillers and pigments can be added through compounding. Non-halogen flame-retardant technology is used for FR PC/ABS grades, which widens the range of applications that can use the material.
The limits matter as much as the benefits. PC/ABS is sensitive to solvents, its UV and weathering performance depends on the stabiliser package in the specific grade, its heat resistance stays below that of unfilled PC, and the blend is opaque because the ABS phase removes the clarity of PC. Grades intended for outdoor or chemically exposed parts should be specified with the relevant modifier package.
Main Applications of PC ABS Blends
PC/ABS appears in three main application areas:
Automotive components. Interior and exterior parts use the material for its durability and impact resistance, including glove boxes, overhead and centre consoles, knee bolsters and blow-moulded seatbacks.
Electrical, electronic and appliance products. TV frames, laptop monitor enclosures, phone exteriors and housings for handheld devices use the blend for its heat resistance, strength and appearance.
Industrial and other consumer products. Power tool housings, equipment covers and general consumer goods rely on the combination of impact performance and surface quality.
Which Extrusion Equipment Is Used for PC ABS Blends?
The standard equipment for PC/ABS compounding is a co-rotating twin screw extruder. The intermeshing screws convey and mix the melt along a controlled screw profile, which is what allows the formulation to be built accurately and repeatably.
The reasons for that choice are specific to the material:
Complete melting and blending. PC and ABS need to be properly melted, mixed and dispersed to achieve a consistent morphology and stable compound quality.
Control of mixing intensity and processing temperature. PC is sensitive to thermal history, so the line has to deliver the dispersion the formulation needs without overheating the melt.
Support for complex formulations. Impact modifiers, flame retardants, UV stabilisers and fillers are added in different states and at different points along the barrel.
Removal of moisture and volatiles. PC absorbs moisture, and compounding also releases volatiles; both must be extracted from the melt to protect part quality.
Continuous compounding and pelletizing. The process runs as a continuous line that converts the compounded melt into uniform pellets.
Key Configurations of a PC ABS Twin Screw Extruder
Each part of the line performs a defined function in PC/ABS processing.
| Configuration | Role in PC ABS Processing |
| Modular screw elements | Adjust the screw combination to suit melting, conveying, mixing and venting requirements |
| Zoned, temperature-controlled barrels | Control melt temperature and thermal history to reduce the risk of overheating and degradation |
| Precision feeding system | Meter PC, ABS and additives consistently into the barrel |
| Side feeding system | Introduce fillers, glass fibre or other components downstream of the main feed |
| Vacuum venting system | Extract moisture and volatiles from the melt |
| Pelletizing system | Match strand, water-ring or underwater pelletizing to the formulation and output |
Beyou PC ABS Blend Extrusion Solutions
Beyou Extrusion Machinery builds twin screw compounding equipment and complete extrusion lines for polymer modification work, with configurations developed against the material and the processing requirement.

A PC/ABS line can be equipped with loss-in-weight feeding, side feeding, liquid addition and vacuum venting, with the screw combination, mixing intensity and wear protection configured for the formulation. CTS-C series machines use screw and barrel sections that combine freely and a self-cleaning structure that keeps residue low and speeds material or colour changeover.
Complete production line. Beyou supplies the line from raw material feeding and twin screw compounding through vacuum devolatilization, cooling, pelletizing, dewatering and screening. The devolatilization line is built for engineering plastics, and its multi-temperature-zone heating system melts the polymer fully, a lab twin screw extruder supports material trials and scale-up before production. Pelletizing options cover underwater and other systems matched to the formulation and output.
Accurate temperature and process control. Segmented barrels with independent temperature control hold the melt within the required band, and the process is optimised through screw speed, feed rate and mixing intensity to reduce the risk of material degradation. PLC control with online monitoring and data recording keeps the running process reproducible batch to batch.
Twin screw extruder models cover laboratory through high-output production, with ranges that include the CTS-40C at 75–230 kg/h and the CTS-65C at 350–800 kg/h in the CTS-C series, and the CTS-40D at 150–350 kg/h through the CTS-135D at 3,000–6,500 kg/h in the CTS-D series.
To configure a production line for a specific PC/ABS formulation, provide the Beyou team with the material grade, additive package, and target output. Based on this information, we can recommend a suitable screw, barrel, and downstream configuration.
